When Karkat first shows up in Homestuck we only know him as a "troll" that pestered the kids constantly before their session in SBURGS even happened. We also know that he's an angry jerk, which would probably be the first impression that anyone would have of him. Just like his troll text "IN WHICH HE TYPES IN CAPITAL LETTERS AND IS YELLING AND INSULTING EVERYONE ALL THE TIME", he is true to his 'quirk' and always seems to be flipping his shit one way or another. He believes that he is a hatched leader and is destined for something great. This is when Sgrub came along. He made sure to make his position as leader clear before taking them through the game. No one really complained or argued with him, only because they didn’t feel like bothering with it, but in the end it couldn’t be denied that he's a really great leader after all! Okay, so he can be stubborn and hot headed and yell all the time, but he also has good ideas. They made it all of the way to the end of their session, even if it was interrupted by the Scratch. And okay, maybe his brilliant order to "troll the kids" was pretty silly, but we cannot be blinded by the fact that he got them so far despite that. Even Vriska agrees that he’s too good of a leader at one point. He made all twelve trolls, who all have their problems and differences, come together to finish a session; their session. It’s just too bad that something stupid had to mess it all up.

He tries hard to the point where he seems to be a bit obsessive, but it's only because he doesn't want to mess up his role as a decisive leader. Vriska points out that he hardly gets a wink of sleep during their 600 hour session because he's too uptight about it. It's true, because he cares too much and is not willing to leave room for mess-ups. He thinks of this session as a way to prove himself to everyone (and by the end of the session the trolls did respect him in some way, even if Karkat may not know himself). So why does he try so hard? Well the obvious reason would be the simple fact that he hates himself and everyone knows it. He is constantly fighting with his past self and future self because 1) he thinks his past self is stupid to the point that he's embarrassed to read his own past logs and 2) he thinks his future self is smug and annoying with nothing but bullshit wisdom. It’s simply in his character to not accept the wisdom from his future self, but he is a growing troll and truly maturing as time goes on, as his future self proves.

He also may seem angry and tough all the time but this can mostly be seen as an act. As stated, he is the least bloodthirsty out of all of the trolls, even fainting by the sight of blood when Kanaya cuts off Tavro’s legs. He isn't at all cold-blooded like he says he is, and there is a point in time when Vriska tells John that Karkat would probably be better off human due to how he is. What she basically means is trolls are supposed to be cold hearted creatures that do what they have to do to survive, but Karkat has a certain sentiment that only humans seem to have. Of course this doesn't mean that Karkat can't fight when he needs too-- like during their session of SGRUBS. He knows how to protect himself, because killing trolls is an acceptable thing in Alternia to keep the genetic lines strong. If he wasn’t capable, he would not have survived this long. Another example of him not being “cold-blooded” is when he refuses to leave Sollux alone, knowing that sober!Gamzee is on the loose. He isn’t at all the save-yourself-first type and wouldn’t abandon anyone.

So we know that he wants everyone to see him as an amazing, tough leader, but it’s also clear that Karkat is far from perfect at being the serious kind. While he doesn't take bullshit, tries to be serious when getting down to business and keeps his cool during the worst of situations, Karkat can be a total dork. Besides the obvious fact that he tends to argue with himself in his own memos, in the beginning we see him play around with his sickle, waving it around for practice in his own room when no one is looking. Sounds like typical 13 year-old dorky kid behavior, right?

As if it wasn’t already obvious, he’s extremely insecure. This is usually masked under a heavy load of sarcasm but it is why he wants to prove himself and why he is so uptight about everything he does as a leader. He feels inferior and he yells and orders because it's easier than asking, and because it is the best way to get attention. In his mind, in order to make people listen to you all you have to do is yell. There’s also that thing about the color of his blood. He's a mutant blood, not even in the hemospecture, and to some trolls this means a lot as it normally ranks you from a low-blood to a high-blood. Yet Karkat’s candy red blood isn’t on the hemospecture, and he’s really insecure about that, hiding it desperately from everyone he knows. He tells Terezi, but only after she’d figured it out herself. He will eventually tell everyone but only when he knows everyone respects him as a leader. But really, this only adds to him fighting with himself again, internally.

Karkat Vantas is also a romantic. Yes, while this may strike anyone as odd he actually understands the concept of romance more than any of the other trolls, and romance is much more complicated for them than humans (with four quadrants that could be filled, FOUR-FOLD THE COMPLICATIONS!). So, how does a troll like Karkat know so much about romance? He loves romance comedies! Sure, he admits that it's a little hard to defend what he likes but they're just soooo goooood. He believes that John Cusack is a universal thing and while he may be embarrassed about his tastes, he isn't afraid to mention it on occasion. He just really likes his rom coms, dammit!

As a matter of fact, he can also go on and on about the topic of romance when triggered, and won't stop until he is made to shut up by force. This is seen in his conversation with Vriska when he is explaining that she’s too messed up for redom romance and too far over at the blackdom scale to have a proper kismesis. The troll’s relationship has only two emotions, hate and pity, and he understands this well. But besides babbling about romance issues even when he isn’t asked, he actually helps a lot of trolls with their romance problems. Okay, so Vriska didn’t ask, but a lot of people do! There’s Tavros, Eridan (mostly Eridan really), and Kanaya who ask for help throughout his memos, and he gives them advice like a good romance expert should. However, this does not mean that Karkat himself is actually an expert at romancing. He is the type of troll that screws up everything including romance; a topic he supposedly knows so well. He is matesprits with Terezi, but at many times his actions are confusing, and in the end he more or less messes the relationship up completely. They seem to simply be on hold for now.

The problem with Karkat in this is that he always has to know the details of everything, is too meticulous and has no sense of adventure. He always has to know exactly what is going on and that takes the fun out of everything. He can be rather insensitive about it too. Even knowing that Terezi had plans for the two of them on Prospit he simply shrugs it off. When Terezi asks if he’s disappointed that they couldn't hang out on Prospit because their dreamselves died, his only answer is, "Well we hanged out in many other places too, so who cares?" It was supposed to be special, but he just didn't see that, the idiot. He also gets really embarrassed about his own romance issues, and would rather just avoid the subject completely. He's even denied that he and Terezi had a thing before from his embarrassment, but well, pretty sure most of them know anyway.

When Karkat talks to his friends, it is almost impossible for him not to insult them in some way. When he is talking to Gamzee he always tells him that he hates how he types without fail. With Sollux he may yell at him for being a prick, saying that his computer hacker skills are stupid (even if he wishs he had those skills, c'mon). In the heat of an argument he may not think things through, being as amazingly stubborn as he is. During his bashing on Sollux’s hacker skills he runs the code that Sollux gave him which 1) will blow up his computer 2) will place a curse on him and everyone he knows. He was told this beforehand, but because he was angry and wanted to prove him wrong, he ran it anyway. Worst mistake ever.

But despite anything that happens, Gamzee, Sollux and Kanaya are all Karkat’s best friends. The funny thing is that with Sollux he has to constantly ask if they are still friends, and at this point Sollux can't tell if he's joking anymore since it seems to happen all the time. This is just how Karkat is, and insults are the way he works. It seems to be only something he can do depending on the person, though, because while he did call Nepeta autistic to her face, when Eridan insulted her his reply was along the lines of "SHE HAS FEELINGS YOU KNOW". Insulting people can be a complicated thing!

It really needs to be stressed, however, that despite the way that Karkat is, he cares for all of his friends. They all mean a lot of him, even the hateful ones. As leader he wants to lead them all, but also protect everyone because he does not want anyone to die. When Sollux dies because he is not brought into his session fast enough, he starts crying like a baby because he blames himself for it. Jack has to slap him around to snap him out of it. And even when it comes to Gamzee, when he had not seen him for a while, he’s seriously worried about him. He even admits to it when he manages to get in contact with him. (Too bad he was sober by then.)

In conclusion, Karkat is a 13 year-old troll hanging by a thread. It’s already bad enough that he knows their session is void and that Jack Noir is on the loose. He holds a lot of responsibility on himself because he took the position of leader in this group, so anything that goes wrong, he will feel is automatically all his fault. Later he learns that despite thinking that it was the kids’ fault that their session was "fucked up", it turns out that it was actually his fault all along. He was so quick to get things done that he didn't care enough about things getting done right. By then more than half of his friends were dead, Gamzee was on the loose, and he believed that all of it was completely his fault. He has a lot bottled up, cracking sometimes but refusing to break entirely because he has to play the part of the leader, and that is that.
